Although I didn’t have any lectures today, I had a test for ELECTENG 204 (Electromagnetics) tonight, the second and final test before the exam. We were being tested on various topics in electromagnetics including energy in inductors and magnetic fields and the such. I must admit I was feeling a bit iffy about the test beforehand because I don’t know if I had studied enough.
But anyway, there was big drama before I had to leave for my test tonight. I was planning to drive to uni tonight for my test and then I could go back to youth group afterwards to join them for the baking night, except my mum was out with the only car we had at the moment, and she wasn’t home at 5pm, one hour before my test! Earlier in the week someone had driven into my mum’s car so it was at the panel-beaters being fixed up. I started panicking because I didn’t know what to do if she didn’t come back home soon, since it was too late to catch a bus by that time. I thought I had better ring someone to ask for a ride to uni, so I called Nick and asked if he could take me to uni but he was in the middle of finishing an assignment, though he did offer to take me if I couldn’t find another way. So then I rang Szelin and asked if she could take me and just as she said she could, my mum came up the driveway! Phew! Close call. I rushed outside and my mum asked why I was still home. I told her that I was waiting for her to come home, and she told me that I could have taken the other car.. apparently the other car was in the garage all along! I didn’t even think to check. That was pretty fail on my part.
I made it to uni just in time and thankfully a there was a vacant carpark close to my test room. I managed to write something down for all the questions, though I don’t know if they were good answers or not. We’ll just have to wait and see.
I made my way back to church after my test to be greeted by nice smells oozing from the kitchen. It was bake night at youth group tonight so everyone was pitching in to bake some nommable (thanks Sunny for introducing me to that word!) goodies. On the baking menu tonight included muffins, cookies, brownies and chocolate crackles. The cookie mix was placed on an oven tray as separate cookies but came out of the oven as a huge flat cookie afterwards. All the cookies had merged into one massive cookie so it was like a… cottage cookie (you know, like a cottage/shepherds pie?). We all enjoyed each other’s baking and it was good to see most people getting involved. And the best thing about it is that I’m not sick yet, so hopefully that means the food was all hygienically sound and everything is going to be okay!
This morning in admidst my half-sleep/half-awake phase, my mum came into my room and supposedly told me to take the house key with me to uni today because she might not be home when I got home. Except I didn’t hear her say that. So this afternoon when I got home, I found Calum sitting outside our back door with no way to get inside since our mum was still out. At first we managed to kill some time by surfing the web on our phones since we could connect to our WiFi, but I soon got bored of sitting around so I tried to find something else to do to help pass time. Luckily I managed to get into our garage (which isn’t connected to our house) and I found a flat basketball by the door so I decided to shoot some hoops with it. Too bad it was flat though; it really took the fun out of playing basketball.
Before long, I noticed my neighbour Szelin waving to me from her lounge window and I signalled her to come over. She came outside to ask what we were doing and we told her that we were locked outside our house because we didn’t have a key to get inside
. She invited us over to her place until our mum came home so we happily followed her back to her house. It had been a while since we were last at her house – ironic really, since one would think that being neighbours meant we could go over to each other’s house all the time. I guess we’ve all just been busy and caught up with uni and other things so we never really got the chance. Szelin was home alone and she made us a hot drink before we had a catch up over the dining table. We continued our discussion downstairs in her bedroom and talked about the recent happenings in our lives. We were introduced to their new dog Lambchop (I think?), who was very energetic. He’s quite the constrast to their other dog Pepper, who has been around for ages. After a couple of hours, our mum finally showed up at home so it was time to say goodbye. Thanks for the hospitality Szelin, hopefully we’ll catch up sometime again in the near future.
A couple of days ago I was talking to one of my workmates on the phone and she told me that our store is moving location soon at Westcity. It came as quite a surprise because I hadn’t heard anything about it previously. She told me that our store was going to be moving to where the clothing store Barkers used to be, near Cotton On Kids. So today during my work break I decided to take a wander to see where our store is going to be relocated. Lo and behold, as I approached Cotton On Kids, I saw that Barkers had in fact already been closed and their store was covered up (presumably they have already started building our new store). It’s an exciting thought that Cotton On Westcity could be moving even before Christmas comes, and I’m definitely looking forward to it. In some ways it’s going to be sad because it will feel like an end of an era, since I’ve worked in our current store for nearly 4 years. However, I guess it means we’ll have more staff at our new store and I won’t have to work by myself on Sunday afternoons any longer. Apparently our current store will be converted into a Cotton On Rubi Shoes store, so it looks like Cotton On won’t be abandoning our store altogether! Watch this space…
Tonight while we were sitting at home watching TV, we all got taken by surprise when the whole room was thrown into darkness. The whole house in fact. A quick look out the window and down the street confirmed the assumption that we weren’t the only ones without power. At least our whole road was struck with a power cut and it just happened to come at a time that was just a bit too dark to see properly. In true emergency spirit, my mum found an assorted collection of candles to light so we could all see. I knew those candles would come in handy one day
It also just so happened to be dinner time for us, so we ate dinner as a family in candle light and I must say it was a definitely a change from the norm. The absence of electricity really made me realise how much time I have without TV, computers and the like, and I think I saw it as a timely reminder that I should always remember to take breaks from these things. After nearly 30 minutes, we heard an array of random beeps coming from various appliances around our house and then everything was back to normal. It was almost as if nothing had happened.
